SUMMARY:BUTTER CHICKEN BRASS BAND and PRABIR MEHTA Live at FSC
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents a performance with BUTTER CHICKEN BRASS BAND with special guest opener PRABIR MEHTA on Thursday\, October 9\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n \nBCBB \nButter Chicken Brass Band is a collaborative effort by musicians across several disciplines to explore the intersection of South Asian music\, a baraat band\, and a New Orleans-style brass band. This music is community music\, and Butter Chicken explores South Asian cultural practices to examine how to blend the sounds of traditional and popular music from the subcontinent with modern world music and American musical genres. The resulting sound and concert experience combines the community\, joy\, and movement of a wedding ceremony with the power and improvisation of a jazz group. Co-led by Catie Hickey (trombone\, arranger)\, Kabir Dalawari (Dhol)\, Akshat Jain (Sousaphone and arranger)\, and Kyle Brooks (saxophones)\, the group features a rotating cast of musicians from the Chicago area\, including Millie Ahern (trumpet) and Steve Bomar (drums). \n \nPRABIR MEHTA \nThe influence from frontman Prabir Mehta’s Indian heritage comes through loud and clear in this introduction\, but you also get a glimpse at the flawless nature of his voice and the way he and the rest of Prabir Trio can create a complete soundscape by using lush layers of beauty\, instrumentation\, and vocals to create a truly complete sound. \n– Girl At The Rock Shows \n \nPrabir makes the space between cultures seem both familiar and fun. \n– Style Weekly \n \nThe record carries influences from chants and prayers\, Indian raga\, and Southern gospel\, all interwoven with driving rock. \n– Charlottesville Weekly \n \nPrabir Trio is an India-inspired rock and roll band that melds eastern and western cultures together for a beautiful sonic experience. \n– NPR Live Sessions \n \n7:30pm PRABIR MEHTA \nPrabir Mehta\, Guitar/Vocals \nPrudhvi Meda\, Mridanga \n \n8:45pm BUTTER CHICKEN \nKyle Brooks\, Saxophones \nCatie Hickey\, Trombone \nAkshat Jain\, Sousaphone \nKabir Dalawari\, Dhol \n \n7pm Doors \n7:30pm Show \nIn-Person Only \n$15 Suggest Donation \nFREE PARKING

SUMMARY:Ancient Mbira Music of Zimbabwe: “Samaita” Vitalis Botsa w/Erica Azim @FSC
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents a performance with Vitalis “Samaita” Botsa and Erica Azim on Friday October 24th at 7:30pm\n\n\nCharismatic Zimbabwean master musician Vitalis “Samaita” Botsa creates \ngorgeous waves of sound with his mbira\, connecting the living with the \nancestors. “I’m just the car\, it’s the spirits doing the driving\, making the music\,” \nhe says. Visiting from his village in Zimbabwe for duo tour with Erica Azim\, \nBotsa is presenting mbira\, an ancient form of sacred music played by the Shona \npeople for over 1\,000 years. \n \nMbira also refers to the musical instrument with metal keys plucked by two \nthumbs and one forefinger\, creating calming yet invigorating polyphony and \npolyrhythm. Musicians play interlocking parts\, and the tradition includes \nextensive improvisation. Century after century\, the mbira instrument and its \nrepertoire of traditional songs have been used in Zimbabwe to heal the sick\, and \nin night-long to week-long ceremonies to summon family ancestors and \npowerful tribal guardian spirits to earth who help the living. Every time the \nmbira is played\, it is considered a prayer to the ancestors that will result in their \nprotection of the living. \n \n7pm Doors \n7:30 Show \n$15 Suggested Donation \nFREE PARKING

SUMMARY:Ian Torres Album Release Show Live at Fulton Street Collective
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents an album release performance with IAN TORRES GROUP on Thursday\, November 20th at 7:00pm\n\n\nThe eveing will feature live painting from visual artist Jesus Monsivais. \n \nComprovisation marks Ian Torres’ first album in 12 years\, a bold return from the Chicago trumpeter\, composer\, and educator. Recorded at his Sótano Creativo Studios\, the project embodies a fresh approach. CD’s and Vinyl of the new album Comprovisation will be available. \nCreated through raw performance and real-time reshaping\, the album layers trumpet\, live saxophone\, synth bass and keys\, with both chopped and live drums. The result is music that is intentional yet unpredictable — rooted in jazz tradition but liberated from the page. \nTorres\, a finalist in the 2005 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Competition and a DownBeat Honorable Mention recipient\, established himself as a rising voice while leading the Ian Torres Big Band (2008–2014)\, culminating in the release of January (2013). With Comprovisation (2025)\, he distills those experiences into a sound where large-ensemble inventiveness collides with modern\, groove-driven production. \nThe album’s release will be celebrated with a live performance featuring an all-star ensemble: Don Tisch (guitar)\, Geof Bradfield (tenor saxophone & bass clarinet)\, Andrew Lawrence (keyboards)\, Alex Austin (bass)\, and Greg Fundis (drums). It will also feature original art from Chicago artist Jesus Monsivais\, whose art is featured on the CD’s and Vinyl that Torres will have for sale at the performance. \n6:30 Doors 7pm Show Two Sets $15 Suggested Donation FREE PARKING

SUMMARY:Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons' THE CRY Performed Live @ JRAC
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Record Art Collective presents Hunter Diamond Quintet performing Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons 1962 release THE CRY Wed. Dec. 3 @ FSC\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \nIn the early ’60s\, flutist Prince Lasha’s work with alto saxophonist Sonny Simmons was often compared to the trailblazing free jazz that Ornette Coleman was exploring at the time. To be sure\, Coleman was a major inspiration to both of them. And yet\, The Cry! demonstrates that Lasha’s work with Simmons had an avant-garde energy of its own. Coleman is a strong influence on this 1962 session — which Lasha co-led with Simmons — but The Cry! isn’t an outright imitation of Coleman’s work any more than Phil Woods’ recordings are outright imitations of Charlie Parker’s. For one thing\, The Cry! is slightly more accessible than the albums that Coleman recorded for Atlantic in the early ’60s. Free jazz performances like “Bojangles\,” “A.Y.\,” and the rhythmic “Congo Call” are abstract\, cerebral\, and left-of-center\, but they’re still a bit more accessible than Coleman’s harmolodic experimentation. The same thing goes for the Latin-influenced “Juanita” and the bluesy “Red’s Mood\,” which is Coleman-minded but also has a strong Charlie Parker influence — in fact\, the tune successfully bridges the gap between Bird and Coleman and shows listeners what those altoists had in common. It should be noted that\, even though The Cry! (which employs Gary Peacock or Mark Proctor on acoustic bass and Gene Stone on drums) is free jazz\, it isn’t the blistering\, ferocious stuff that Albert Ayler\, Cecil Taylor\, and late-period John Coltrane were known for in the 1960s. This album is quirky and dissonant\, but it isn’t harsh or confrontational. In avant-garde circles\, The Cry! went down in history as one of Lasha’s finest accomplishments — and deservedly so.~Alex Henderson \nHunter Diamond – flute \nDave Rempis – alto saxophone \nJoshua Abrams – bass \nChristian Dillingham – bass \nMike Reed – drums \n7pm Doors7:30pm Show$15 Suggest DonationFREE PARKING
