SUMMARY:Mahavishnu Orchestra's BIRDS OF FIRE Performed Live @ JRAC
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Record Art Collective presents Andrew Lawrence Quintet performing Mahavishnu Orchestra’s 1973 release BIRDS OF FIRE @ FSC on Nov. 13th\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n“Emboldened by the popularity of Inner Mounting Flame among rock audiences\, the first Mahavishnu Orchestra set out to further define and refine its blistering jazz-rock direction in its second …. studio album. … Birds of Fire is audibly more varied in texture\, even more tightly organized\, and thankfully more musical in content. A remarkable example of precisely choreographed\, high-speed solo trading — with John McLaughlin\, Jerry Goodman\, and Jan Hammer all of one mind\, supported by Billy Cobham’s machine-gun drumming and Rick Laird’s dancing bass — can be heard on the aptly named … This album actually became a major crossover hit\, rising to number 15 on the pop album charts\, and it remains the key item in the first Mahavishnu Orchestra’s slim discography.”~Richard S. SUMMARY:Ian Torres Album Release Show Live at Fulton Street Collective
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents an album release performance with IAN TORRES GROUP on Thursday\, November 20th at 7:00pm\n\n\nThe eveing will feature live painting from visual artist Jesus Monsivais. \n \nComprovisation marks Ian Torres’ first album in 12 years\, a bold return from the Chicago trumpeter\, composer\, and educator. Recorded at his Sótano Creativo Studios\, the project embodies a fresh approach. CD’s and Vinyl of the new album Comprovisation will be available. \nCreated through raw performance and real-time reshaping\, the album layers trumpet\, live saxophone\, synth bass and keys\, with both chopped and live drums. The result is music that is intentional yet unpredictable — rooted in jazz tradition but liberated from the page. \nTorres\, a finalist in the 2005 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Competition and a DownBeat Honorable Mention recipient\, established himself as a rising voice while leading the Ian Torres Big Band (2008–2014)\, culminating in the release of January (2013). With Comprovisation (2025)\, he distills those experiences into a sound where large-ensemble inventiveness collides with modern\, groove-driven production. \nThe album’s release will be celebrated with a live performance featuring an all-star ensemble: Don Tisch (guitar)\, Geof Bradfield (tenor saxophone & bass clarinet)\, Andrew Lawrence (keyboards)\, Alex Austin (bass)\, and Greg Fundis (drums). It will also feature original art from Chicago artist Jesus Monsivais\, whose art is featured on the CD’s and Vinyl that Torres will have for sale at the performance. \n6:30 Doors 7pm Show Two Sets $15 Suggested Donation FREE PARKING

SUMMARY:Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons' THE CRY Performed Live @ JRAC
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Record Art Collective presents Hunter Diamond Quintet performing Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons 1962 release THE CRY Wed. Dec. 3 @ FSC\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \nIn the early ’60s\, flutist Prince Lasha’s work with alto saxophonist Sonny Simmons was often compared to the trailblazing free jazz that Ornette Coleman was exploring at the time. To be sure\, Coleman was a major inspiration to both of them. And yet\, The Cry! demonstrates that Lasha’s work with Simmons had an avant-garde energy of its own. Coleman is a strong influence on this 1962 session — which Lasha co-led with Simmons — but The Cry! isn’t an outright imitation of Coleman’s work any more than Phil Woods’ recordings are outright imitations of Charlie Parker’s. For one thing\, The Cry! is slightly more accessible than the albums that Coleman recorded for Atlantic in the early ’60s. Free jazz performances like “Bojangles\,” “A.Y.\,” and the rhythmic “Congo Call” are abstract\, cerebral\, and left-of-center\, but they’re still a bit more accessible than Coleman’s harmolodic experimentation. The same thing goes for the Latin-influenced “Juanita” and the bluesy “Red’s Mood\,” which is Coleman-minded but also has a strong Charlie Parker influence — in fact\, the tune successfully bridges the gap between Bird and Coleman and shows listeners what those altoists had in common. It should be noted that\, even though The Cry! (which employs Gary Peacock or Mark Proctor on acoustic bass and Gene Stone on drums) is free jazz\, it isn’t the blistering\, ferocious stuff that Albert Ayler\, Cecil Taylor\, and late-period John Coltrane were known for in the 1960s. This album is quirky and dissonant\, but it isn’t harsh or confrontational. In avant-garde circles\, The Cry! went down in history as one of Lasha’s finest accomplishments — and deservedly so.~Alex Henderson \nHunter Diamond – flute \nDave Rempis – alto saxophone \nJoshua Abrams – bass \nChristian Dillingham – bass \nMike Reed – drums \n7pm Doors7:30pm Show$15 Suggest DonationFREE PARKING

SUMMARY:50th anniversary of Pat Metheny's BRIGHT SIZE LIFE @ JRAC
DESCRIPTION:JRAC presents Paul Mutzabaugh 3 celebrating the 50th anniversary of Pat Metheny’s BRIGHT SIZE LIFE Mon. Dec. 8th @ Fulton Street Collective\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \nPat Metheny’s debut studio album is a good one\, a trio date that finds him already laying down the distinctively cottony\, slightly withdrawn tone and asymmetrical phrasing that would serve him well through most of the swerves in direction ahead. His original material\, all of it lovely\, bears the bracing air of his Midwestern upbringing\, with titles like “Missouri Uncompromised\,” “Midwestern Nights Dream\,” and “Omaha Celebration.” There is also a sole harbinger of radical matters way down the road with the inclusion of a loose-jointed treatment of Ornette Coleman’s “Round Trip/Broadway Blues\,” proving that Song X did not come from totally out of the blue. Besides being Metheny’s debut\, this LP also features one of the earliest recordings of Jaco Pastorius\, a fully formed\, well-matched contrapuntal force on electric bass\, though content to leave the spotlight mostly to Metheny. Bob Moses\, who like Metheny played in the Gary Burton Quintet at the time\, is the drummer\, and he can mix it up\, too.~Richard S. SUMMARY:Tommy Flanagan's OVERSEAS Performed Live @ JRAC
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Record Art Collective presents Jayden Richardson Trio performing Tommy Flanagan’s 1957 debut release OVERSEAS on Wed. Dec. 10th at FSC\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n“This studio session represents one of Tommy Flanagan’s earliest dates as a leader\, recorded while he was in Stockholm\, Sweden. Bassist Wilbur Little and a young Elvin Jones on drums provide strong support\, but the focus is on Flanagan’s brilliant piano. The brilliant opener is a potent brisk run through Charlie Parker’s “Relaxin’ at Camarillo\,” followed by a faster than typical “Chelsea Bridge\,” which the leader playfully detours into another Billy Strayhorn composition (“Raincheck”) for a moment\, while also featuring Jones’ brushwork in a pair of breaks. Flanagan’s approach to the venerable standard “Willow Weep for Me” is steeped in blues\, backed by Little’s imaginative accompaniment. The bulk of this date is devoted to Flanagan’s compositions\, though only one\, “Eclypso\,” remained in his repertoire for long. This engaging piece alternates between calypso and bop\, with Jones switching between sticks and brushes. “Beat’s Up” has the obvious influence of Bud Powell\, while the extended blues “Little Rock” opens with a sauntering bass solo.”~Ken Dryden \nJayden Richardson is a rising musician who has quickly built a reputation both locally and nationally for his innovative musicality. Hailing from a musical family\, he grew up immersed in the sounds of jazz and gospel\, which became the foundation for his exploration of modern genres and his distinct creative voice. After graduating from DePaul University\, Jayden Richardson has become one of Chicago’s most sought-after drummers. Known for his versatility\, he excels across genres such as jazz\, hip-hop\, funk\, gospel\, musical theatre\, dance\, and more. In addition to his drumming\, he is an accomplished pianist and composer\, earning numerous accolades for his work in film scoring\, including multiple awards for his original scores at film festivals. \nJayden Richardson – DrumsElio Wijaya – PianoClark Sommers – Bass \n8pm Doors8:30pm Show$15 Suggest DonationFREE PARKING

SUMMARY:Milt Jackson's THE BIG 3 and BAGS MEETS WES Performed Live at JRAC
DESCRIPTION:JRAC presents Senya Rogers Kaufman & Friends performing two Milt Jackson records\, THE BIG 3 and BAGS MEETS WES Tuesday. December. 16 at FSC\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \nTHE BIG 3“This set features a notable pianoless combo: vibraphonist Milt Jackson\, guitarist Joe Pass\, and bassist Ray Brown. These three masterful players recorded together in many settings during the Pablo years\, but only this once as a trio. The colorful repertoire — ranging from “The Pink Panther” and “Blue Bossa” to “Nuages” and “Come Sunday” — acts as a device for the musicians to construct some brilliant bop-based solos.~Scott Yanow \nBAGS MEETS WES“Milt Jackson was 38 when\, in December 1961\, he co-led this superb hard-bop date with the distinctive guitarist Wes Montgomery. A jazzman who was as opinionated as he was gifted\, Jackson wouldn’t hesitate to tell you exactly what he thought of a musician — so when he praised Montgomery\, you knew his praise was genuine. Not surprisingly\, the boppers prove to be quite compatible on Bags Meets Wes\, which finds them co-leading an all star-quintet that also includes pianist Wynton Kelly\, bassist Sam Jones\, and drummer Philly Joe Jones (who shouldn’t be confused with swing drummer Jo Jones). Although Jackson and Montgomery prove what lyrical ballad players they could be on the standard “Stairway to the Stars\,” ballads aren’t a high priority on this album. Instead\, the improvisers put more of their energy into the blues — and the 12-bar format serves them well on “Sam Sack\,” “Blue Roz\,” and “S.K.J.” Equally strong are hard-swinging versions of Montgomery’s “Jingles” and Benny Golson’s “Stablemates.”~Alex Henderson \nSenya Rogers Kaufman – GuitarWanye Williams – VibraphoneJude Peterson – PianoDylan Reed – BassZach Sorkin – Drums \n7pm Doors7:30pm Show$15 Suggest DonationFREE PARKING

SUMMARY:Art Blakey's 1958 album MOANIN' Performed Live at JRAC
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Record Art Collective presents Kabir Dalawari Quintet performing Art Blakey’s album MOANIN’ Thur. Dec. 18th @ Fulton Street Collective\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist Diane Hoffman. \n“Moanin’ includes some of the greatest music Blakey produced in the studio with arguably his very best band. There are three tracks that are immortal and will always stand the test of time. The title selection is a pure tuneful melody stewed in a bluesy shuffle penned by pianist Bobby Timmons\, while tenor saxophonist Benny Golson’s classy\, slowed “Along Came Betty” and the static\, militaristic “Blues March” will always have a home in the repertoire of every student or professional jazz band. “Are You Real?” has the most subtle of melody lines\, and “Drum Thunder Suite” has Blakey’s quick blasting tom-tom-based rudiments reigning on high as the horns sigh\, leading to hard bop. “Come Rain or Come Shine” is the piece that commands the most attention\, a highly modified\, lilting arrangement where the accompanying staggered\, staccato rhythms contrast the light-hearted refrains. Certainly a complete and wholly satisfying album\, Moanin’ ranks with the very best of Blakey and what modern jazz offered in the late ’50s and beyond.”~Michael G Nastos \nChris Madsen\, Tenor SaxophoneMillie Ahearn\, TrumpetOliver Scott\, PianoMarlene Rosenburg\, BassKabir Dalawari\, Drums \n7pm Doors7:30pm Show$15 Suggest DonationFREE PARKING

SUMMARY:EMILY CHLOE QUINN ENSEMBLE Live at FSC
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents a return performance with EMILY CHLOE QUINN ENSEMBLE on Sunday\, March 8th at 7:30pm.\n\n\nFulton Street Collective presents a return performance with EMILY CHLOE QUINN ENSEMBLE on Sunday\, March 8th at 7:30pm. \n \nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \nThe Emily Chloe Quinn Ensemble is an original baroque-pop music group based in Chicago. The songs feature prominent piano with mellotron\, flute\, clarinet/bassoon\, bass guitar\, and sometimes drums/percussion\, with a modern pop spin on a classical chamber style. Emily’s pointed\, story-like lyrics and infectious melodies explore the atmosphere of our time and inspire introspection with philosophical musings. The ensemble exhibits a vintage-modern aesthetic\, with glimmers of Old Hollywood\, but exists in today’s modern world and expresses timeless experiences. Members of the ensemble include singer-songwriter Emily Chloe Quinn on voice/piano/keys\, Paul Vincent on bass and backing vocals\, and Caylee Wells on flute. The logo and poster designs are by Caylee Wells. The Mixing and Mastering of the 2025 single releases are by Paul M. Vincent. They are working on their first full-length album with hopes of releasing it before the close of 2026. \n7pm Doors7:30pm Show (2 Sets)$15FREE PARKING

SUMMARY:PAT METHENY GROUP (1978) Performed Live at JRAC
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Record Art Collective presents Jim Barclay & Friends performing the 1978 release PAT METHENY GROUP on Wednesday\, March 11th at FSC\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n“Many elements that became defining traits of the band’s overall sound were in place on this album\, namely Metheny’s incorporation of several different guitars and Mays’s fusion of electronic and acoustic keyboards to create a fuller\, more harmonically sophisticated foundation for the melodies and solos. This is notably evidenced on “Phase Dance” where Metheny introduces the main melody on an acoustic guitar and then switches to electric to play one of the improvisational solos\, with Mays providing the foundation on keyboards before playing the other solo. “Phase Dance” quickly became a signature song for the Group\, most often played in concert as an introductory piece. “Jaco” is a tribute to Jaco Pastorius\, who pioneered the fretless electric bass in jazz fusion.” \n~Wiki \nChris Siebold – GuitarChris Mahieu – KeysPatrick Williams – BassJim Barclay – Drums \n7pm Doors7:30pm Show$15 Suggest DonationFREE PARKING
