SUMMARY:Freddie Hubbard's HUB CAP and THE ARTISTRY Performed Live at JRAC
DESCRIPTION:JRAC presents Constantine Alexander’s FIRETET performing Freddie Hubbard’s 1961 release HUB CAP and Hubbard’s 1962 release THE ARTISTRY\n\n\nWednesday\, October 23rd at 8pm. \nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n \nHUB CAP \n“From Hubbard’s opening solo on the flying\, boppish title track\, which crackles with his trademark urgency\, crisp\, flaring sound and hell-for-leather attack\, the music throws you back into a jazz era when the muscular dynamism of hard-bop was at the sharp end of a still commercially popular jazz.”~John Fordham \n \nARTISTRY \n“This 1962 effort was Freddie Hubbard’s first recording under his own name for Impulse!…Hubbard’s shimmering style and clear tone show a clear debt to the late Clifford Brown and a nod to the bold sonic curiosity of John Coltrane. These are some hot young players pushing a classic format forward. \n~Rovi Staff \n \nFIRETET \nConstantine Alexander – Trumpet \nRoy McGrath – Tenor Saxophone \nKirby Fellis – Trombone \nJulius Tucker – Piano \nBen Dillinger – Bass \nGreg Essig – Drums \n7:30 Doors8pm ShowIn-Person Only$15 Suggest DonationFREE PARKING

SUMMARY:A BENNY GOLSON CELEBRATION with ANDY BAKER's CHI-TET Live at FSC
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents A BENNY GOLSON CELEBRATION with ANDY BAKER’s CHI-TET on Wednesday\, October 16th at 8pm\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n“Benny Golson\, a master saxophonist revered as much for the durable standards he contributed to the jazz repertoire as for his eloquent tenor sound\, died on Saturday at his home in Manhattan. He was 95. His longtime manager and agent\, Jason Franklin\, said he died after a short illness. Golson played an integral role in the transition from bebop to hard bop through his short but vital tenure with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers\, and with his own influential Jazztet\, co-led by trumpeter Art Farmer. But his place in the jazz pantheon would be secure even if he had never played a note. Few jazz musicians can claim as many bona fide standards to their credit: bedrock compositions like “Whisper Not\,” “Stablemates\,” “I Remember Clifford\,” “Along Came Betty\,” “Killer Joe\,” and “Blues March.” “Every stroke of his pen became another classic\,” trumpeter Eddie Henderson\, a member of one of his bands\, tells WRTI. “His signature sound was undeniable: he could play one note and you knew it was Benny Golson. That’s the mark of a true artist.” \n~bennygolson.com \n \nAndy Baker – TromboneDerek Gardner – TrumpetGeof Bradfield – Tenor SaxJeremy Kahn – PianoLarry Kohut – BassCliff Wallace – Drums \n7:30 Doors8pm Show (2 Sets)$15 Suggest DonationFREE PARKING \n \nPhoto by Frans Schellekens

SUMMARY:Regina Taylor's EXHIBIT Performed Live at Fulton Street Collective; Night 2
DESCRIPTION:FSC presents a reading of “EXHIBIT”\, a new one-woman play by Regina Taylor—award-winning actress\, writer\, director\, and activist Oct. 9 + 10\n\n\nFulton Street Collective presents a reading of “EXHIBIT”\, a new one-woman play by Regina \nTaylor—award-winning actress\, writer\, director\, and activist—on October 9th and 10th at 7:30 PM. \nIn “EXHIBIT”\, we follow Iris\, an artist triggered by today’s backlash and rollback of social progress. As she retraces her childhood memories of the martyrdom of innocence for a cause in a violently fractured civil rights era America\, Iris grapples with the question: What is the cost of a ticket to freedom—and when will we ever arrive? \n“EXHIBIT” is the Recipient of the 2023 Theatre Aspen Solo Flights Award. Taylor is presenting public readings of the work in selected cities during this very incendiary Presidential campaign season. The play will premiere at Denver Colorado’s Curious Theater in May 2025. \n“EXHIBIT is Art meeting Purpose because now is not the time to be silent. The work is about getting people to use their voices- To get out and Vote!” -Regina Taylor \nREGISTER TO VOTE \n \nRegina Taylor is an award-winning actress\, (Golden Globe\, multiple NAACP Image Awards\, Emmy nomination.) \nHer acting credits include notable roles in “I’ll Fly Away\,” “The Unit\,” and “CSI: Vegas\,” as well as in films such as “Lean on Me” with Morgan Freeman\, “The Negotiator” with Samuel L. Jackson\, “Courage Under Fire” with Denzel Washington\, and Spike Lee’s “Clockers”\, “A Good Day to Die” alongside Sidney Poitier\, “First Wives” with Viola Davis\, “Justified” with Aunjanue Ellis\, and “Lovecraft Country” with Jurnee Smollett-Bell. SUMMARY:JOE GROSS QUARTET and NATURAL SATELLITE Live at Fulton Street Collective
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents a performance with JOE GROSS QUARTET and NATURAL SATELLITE on Monday\, October 7th..7:30pm Early Start time\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n \nJoe Gross started playing professionally at age 15\, soon becoming one of the most in demand trumpet players in the Chicago area. Over the years\, he has worked with many excellent musicians\, including Peter Nero\, Michel LeGrande\, Nelson Riddle\, Lou Marini\, Jon Faddis\, Phil Wilson\, Clark Terry\, Carl Fontana\, James Moody\, Jeff Jarvis\, Chris Vadala\, Manny Albam\, and Bob Curnow.~ jgjazzman.com \n“First of all the main instruments here are cello and saxophone which is a very welcome deviation from the acoustic guitar and piano combo. The music leans towards jazz that is combined with accessible vocal melodies which give it a slightly more indie pop feel. It reminds me of a group you might hear on a Saturday night at a place like the Green Mill in Chicago. The songs reflect the moon\, some noir and unequivocally sound better when the sun has gone down.” \n~ Dan Weston\, ‘Divide and Conquer’ \n \n7:30pm NATURAL SATELLITE \nKarli Reisdorf – Cello/Vox \nJason Reisdorf – Sax \n \n8:30pm JOE GROSS QUARTET \nJoe Gross – TrumpetMike Allemana – GuitarEthan Philion – BassCami Mennitte – Drums \n \n7pm Doors7:30 pm ShowIn-Person Only$15 Suggest DonationFREE PARKING

Taken from their somewhat tumultuous but very musical tour of Europe\, most of these rather lengthy workouts actually just feature a quintet because Coles took sick (he is only heard on “So Long Eric\,” which here is mistitled “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”)\, but the playing is at such a high level that the trumpeter is not really missed. “Orange Was the Color of Her Dress” is given definitive treatment\, and the nearly 29-minute “Fables of Faubus” and Mingus’ relatively brief feature on “Sophisticated Lady” are impressive\, but it is the passionate “Meditations on Integration” (an utterly fascinating performance) and “Parkeriana” (a tribute to Charlie Parker that features some stride piano from Byard and what may very well have been Dolphy’s greatest alto solo) that make this gem truly essential in all jazz collections \n~Scottt Yanow \n \n \nChristopher Dammann – bass \nNick Anaya – saxophones \nRichard Zili – clarinets \nJim Baker – piano \nJacob Fawcett – drums \n \n7:30 Doors8pm Show$15 Suggested DonationFREE PARKING

Showcasing members of the percussion studio from different graduation years and diverse backgrounds\, this group acts as a bridge between past and future cohorts of Northwestern percussionists.” \nBridge (verb): make a difference between two groups smaller or less significant.“The production of Seven Pillars is equal parts challenging and rewarding. This trailblazing suite for chamber percussion requires command over the individual’s part and subsequent surrender to composite grooves.
