SUMMARY:PUCCINI MY LOVE\, Live at Fulton Street Collective
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective in collaboration w/Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago presents a live performance of Puccini My Love\, May 30th\n\n\nWhat happens when improvisation meets 19th century opera? When jazz meets Puccini? Something incredible and unique happens\, giving birth to the project Puccini\, My Love by the Italian duo Back-In-Time (B.I.T.). \nOn the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the death of Giacomo Puccini\, the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago in collaboration with Fulton Street Collective\, presents the live concert Puccini\, My love performed by Danielle di Majo (sax) and Manuela Pasqui (piano). The evergreen melodies of one of the most important and influential opera composers of all time tie to the sensitivity of two modern improvisers. The concert is a tribute to Puccini\, an avant-garde composer who\, at the turn of two centuries\, represented the Italian Opera. \nFree with registration. Registration link upcoming. \n \nDanielle di Majo and Manuela Pasqui have been performing musical duos since 2019. From the beginning\, they had a special connection thanks to shared artistic objectives that inspired their “musical research”. In this formation\, they have already recorded two albums for Filibusta Record’s\, in 2021 and 2023. The duo’s first Back-in-Time (B.I.T.) album was based on a new interpretation of material from classical repertoires and original songs. Their intention was to build their own personal sound and lyricism\, as well as develop a shared musical language. Their second album is an exclusive collection of original tunes. It provides fertile ground for the two instrumentalists to deepen their melodic expression and the art of dialectic interaction between two musical instruments. It is the result of continuous and profound research\, both in composition and improvisation. \n \n7:30 Doors \n8pm Show \n$15 Suggested Donation to support FSC \nFREE PARKING

SUMMARY:Oliver Nelson's The BLUES And The ABSTRACT TRUTH Performed Live at JRAC
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Record Art Collective presents Zack Markstet performing Oliver Nelson’s 1961 Release THE BLUES AND THE ABSTRACT TRUTH on Tue. May 21st\n\n\nat Fulton Street Collective \n \nThe night will also feature live painting from visual artist Arthur Wright. \nALBUM BACKGROUND:“Oliver Nelson is known primarily as a big band leader and arranger but lesser known as a saxophonist and organizer of small ensembles. Blues and the Abstract Truth is his triumph as a musician for the aspects of not only defining the sound of an era with his all-time classic “Stolen Moments\,” but on this recording\, assembling one of the most potent modern jazz sextets ever\, featuring Freddie Hubbard\, Eric Dolphy\, Bill Evans\, Paul Chambers and Roy Haynes. The album itself is an exploration of the mood and structure of the blues\, though only some of the tracks are structured in the conventional 12-bar blues form. In this regard\, it may be seen as a continuation of the trend towards greater harmonic simplicity and subtlety via reimagined versions of the blues that was instigated by Miles Davis‘s Kind of Blue in 1959.”~Michael G Nastos \n \nZack Marks – DrumsConstantine Alexander – Trumpet \nAndy Baker – Trombone \nRoy McGrath – Saxes \nBrad MacDonald – Piano \nAndrew Vogt – Bass \n \n7:30 Doors8pm ShowFree Parking$15 Suggested Donation

SUMMARY:Chad McCullough's Modal Horizons Perform the Music of JIM KNAPP
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents Chad McCullough’s Modal Horizons Performing the music of trumpeter/composer Jim Knapp on Sunday May 5th\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA \n \n” (Jim)Knapp studied trumpet and composition at the University of Illinois. In 1977\, he began an eight-year stint as director of the Composers And Improvisors Orchestra. This was a jazz chamber orchestra\, created to present new work by members of the orchestra and by composers such as Carla Bley\, Anthony Braxton\, Bob Brookmeyer\, Gil Evans\, Dave Holland\, Jim McNeely\, Art Lande\, Gary Peacock\, Julian Priester\, Sam Rivers and Cedar Walton. Resident in the Pacific Northwest\, in 1995 he formed the Jim Knapp Orchestra. This band\, which performed at clubs and festivals in the region and has recorded for Seabreeze and A-Records\, drew its repertoire largely from Knapp’s original compositions and arrangements. In the mid- and late 90s he could also be heard accompanying other artists\, appearing\, for example\, with singer Jay Clayton. Knapp’s next venture came in 1999 when he founded the Chamber Groove Orchestra\, a large ensemble using regular big band instrumentation together with strings\, voices and woodwinds. Knapp has also written music for theatre and dance companies. He is a skilled trumpeter although the chief focus of his talent appears to lie in his work as a composer and orchestrator of music of great lyrical beauty.” \n~Origin Records \n \nChad McCullough\, Brent Turney – Trumpet \nRyan Shultz – Bass Trumpet \nGeof Bradfield\, Jon Irabagon\, Lenard Simpson\, Scott Burns – Saxes \nJohn Blane – Bass Trombone \nMomo Hasselbring – Horn \nPaul Mutzabaugh – Keys \nJohn Christensen – Bass \nJon Deitemeyer – Drums \n \n7:30 Doors \n8pm Show \n$15 Suggested Donation \nFree Parking

DESCRIPTION:Jazz Record Art Collective presents Duff Driscoll Nonet performing Miles Davis’ BIRTH OF THE COOL\, released in 1957 on Wed. This is where the elasticity of bop was married with skillful\, big-band arrangements and a relaxed\, subdued mood that made it all seem easy\, even at its most intricate…The virtuosity led to relaxing\, stylish mood music as the end result — the very thing that came to define West Coast or “cool” jazz — but this music is so inventive\, it remains alluring even after its influence has been thoroughly absorbed into the mainstream” \n~Stephen Thomas Erlewine \n \nThaddeus Duff Driscoll – Double Bass \nMillie Ahearn – Trumpet \nAndy Schlinder – Alto Saxophone \nAbram Collier – Baritone Saxophone \nMomo Seko – French Horn \nAndy Baker – Trombone \nPete Isaac – Tuba \nBrandon Harper – Piano \nKabir Dalawari – Drums \n \n7:30 Doors8pm ShowFree Parking$15 Suggested Donation

SUMMARY:Paul Chambers' 1956 release WHIMS OF CHAMBERS Performed Live at JRAC
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Record Art Collective presents Christopher Dammann Quintet performing Paul Chambers’ 1956 release WHIMS OF CHAMBERS Tuesday\, April 23\n\n\nThe night will also feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n \n“Of the seven songs on this Blue Note date\, four are more common than the other three because they contain solos by tenor saxophonist John Coltrane and have therefore been reissued more often. Actually there are quite a few solos in the all-star sextet (which includes the bassist-leader\, Coltrane\, trumpeter Donald Byrd\, guitarist Kenny Burrell\, pianist Horace Silver\, and drummer Philly Joe Jones) and all of the players get their chances to shine on this fairly spontaneous hard bop set. Coltrane‘s two obscure compositions (“Nita” and “Just for the Love”) are among the more memorable tunes and are worth reviving. “Tale of the Fingers” features the quintet without Coltrane\, the rhythm section stretches out on “Whims of Chambers\,” and “Tale of the Fingers” is a showcase for Chambers’ bowed bass. This is a fine effort and would be worth picking up by straight-ahead jazz fans even if John Coltrane had not participated.”~Scott Yanow \n \nChristopher Dammann – Bass \nJames Davis – Trumpet \nJon Irabagon – Tenor \nJim Baker – Piano \nDushun Mosley – Drums \n7:30 Doors8pm ShowFree Parking$15 Suggested Donation
