SUMMARY:Chad McCullough's Modal Horizons Perform the Music of JIM KNAPP
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents Chad McCullough’s Modal Horizons Performing the music of trumpeter/composer Jim Knapp on Sunday May 5th\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA \n \n” (Jim)Knapp studied trumpet and composition at the University of Illinois. In 1977\, he began an eight-year stint as director of the Composers And Improvisors Orchestra. This was a jazz chamber orchestra\, created to present new work by members of the orchestra and by composers such as Carla Bley\, Anthony Braxton\, Bob Brookmeyer\, Gil Evans\, Dave Holland\, Jim McNeely\, Art Lande\, Gary Peacock\, Julian Priester\, Sam Rivers and Cedar Walton. Resident in the Pacific Northwest\, in 1995 he formed the Jim Knapp Orchestra. This band\, which performed at clubs and festivals in the region and has recorded for Seabreeze and A-Records\, drew its repertoire largely from Knapp’s original compositions and arrangements. In the mid- and late 90s he could also be heard accompanying other artists\, appearing\, for example\, with singer Jay Clayton. Knapp’s next venture came in 1999 when he founded the Chamber Groove Orchestra\, a large ensemble using regular big band instrumentation together with strings\, voices and woodwinds. Knapp has also written music for theatre and dance companies. He is a skilled trumpeter although the chief focus of his talent appears to lie in his work as a composer and orchestrator of music of great lyrical beauty.” \n~Origin Records \n \nChad McCullough\, Brent Turney – Trumpet \nRyan Shultz – Bass Trumpet \nGeof Bradfield\, Jon Irabagon\, Lenard Simpson\, Scott Burns – Saxes \nJohn Blane – Bass Trombone \nMomo Hasselbring – Horn \nPaul Mutzabaugh – Keys \nJohn Christensen – Bass \nJon Deitemeyer – Drums \n \n7:30 Doors \n8pm Show \n$15 Suggested Donation \nFree Parking

DESCRIPTION:Jazz Record Art Collective presents Duff Driscoll Nonet performing Miles Davis’ BIRTH OF THE COOL\, released in 1957 on Wed. May 1st at 8pm\n\n\nThe night will also feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \nALBUM BACKGROUND:“These three sessions — two from early 1949\, one from March 1950 — are where the sound known as cool jazz essentially formed\, Birth of the Cool remains one of the defining\, pivotal moments in jazz. This is where the elasticity of bop was married with skillful\, big-band arrangements and a relaxed\, subdued mood that made it all seem easy\, even at its most intricate…The virtuosity led to relaxing\, stylish mood music as the end result — the very thing that came to define West Coast or “cool” jazz — but this music is so inventive\, it remains alluring even after its influence has been thoroughly absorbed into the mainstream” \n~Stephen Thomas Erlewine \n \nThaddeus Duff Driscoll – Double Bass \nMillie Ahearn – Trumpet \nAndy Schlinder – Alto Saxophone \nAbram Collier – Baritone Saxophone \nMomo Seko – French Horn \nAndy Baker – Trombone \nPete Isaac – Tuba \nBrandon Harper – Piano \nKabir Dalawari – Drums \n \n7:30 Doors8pm ShowFree Parking$15 Suggested Donation

SUMMARY:Paul Chambers' 1956 release WHIMS OF CHAMBERS Performed Live at JRAC
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Record Art Collective presents Christopher Dammann Quintet performing Paul Chambers’ 1956 release WHIMS OF CHAMBERS Tuesday\, April 23\n\n\nThe night will also feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n \n“Of the seven songs on this Blue Note date\, four are more common than the other three because they contain solos by tenor saxophonist John Coltrane and have therefore been reissued more often. Actually there are quite a few solos in the all-star sextet (which includes the bassist-leader\, Coltrane\, trumpeter Donald Byrd\, guitarist Kenny Burrell\, pianist Horace Silver\, and drummer Philly Joe Jones) and all of the players get their chances to shine on this fairly spontaneous hard bop set. Coltrane‘s two obscure compositions (“Nita” and “Just for the Love”) are among the more memorable tunes and are worth reviving. “Tale of the Fingers” features the quintet without Coltrane\, the rhythm section stretches out on “Whims of Chambers\,” and “Tale of the Fingers” is a showcase for Chambers’ bowed bass. This is a fine effort and would be worth picking up by straight-ahead jazz fans even if John Coltrane had not participated.”~Scott Yanow \n \nChristopher Dammann – Bass \nJames Davis – Trumpet \nJon Irabagon – Tenor \nJim Baker – Piano \nDushun Mosley – Drums \n7:30 Doors8pm ShowFree Parking$15 Suggested Donation

SUMMARY:FOURNIER/WALKER DUO Live at Fulton Street Collective
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents a performance with FOURNIER/WALKER DUO on Wednesday\, April 10th at 8pm\n\n\nThe Fournier/Walker Duo has been performing for over a decade. Over the years it has developed into a very unique ensemble\, ranging from more traditional playing to a Daoist flow approach\, in which no preconceptions are used. \nBoth Joe Fournier and Dave Walker are visual thinkers. Fournier’s award-winning political strip appeared in The Chicago Tribune and nationwide for around 15 years\, some of which are in The Library of Congress. His current focus\, aside from the duo\, is on public art. Dave Walker is a much sought after\, award-winning architect\, whose work can also be seen nationwide. \nThe PerformanceThe performance is a series of Fournier’s animations and compositions\, which run from fairly traditional composing\, to sketches\, to audience cellphone participation\, as well as the aforementioned Daoist Flow playing. (The German’s have a word for this kind of multimedia performance\, “Gesamtkunstwerk”. I don’tknow that we do. I suppose “amalgamation” is close.) \n(Note to reader) The performance is nowhere near as uptight as this write-up might suggest. It’s actually quite engaging and a whole lot of fun! \nDave Walker – GuitarJoe Fournier – Bari Sax\, Bansuri\, Shruti Box…and a few other things \n7:30 Doors8pm Show (2 Sets)In-Person Only$15 Suggest DonationFREE PARKING
