SUMMARY:Mountlake Terrace High School Jazz Ensemble Live @ Fulton Street Collective
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents a performance with Mountlake Terrace High School’s Jazz Ensemble with director Darin Faul.\n\n\nThe performance will feature Chicago jazz professors Chad McCullough\, Geof Bradfield and Scott Burns. \n \nThe Mountlake Terrace High School Jazz Ensemble is recognized throughout the Pacific Northwest as a top performing high school jazz band. They are a nine time Finalist in the Essentially Ellington Competition held in New York City\, and are honored regularly at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow\, Idaho. Students have taken top honors at regional and national competitions over the years\, and have been featured in All-State and All-Northwest music groups\, as well as National Ensembles like the Grammy Bands. Directing the band is Mr. Darin Faul\, who has been teaching and directing these fabulous bands for the past 25 years. \nThe Mountlake Terrace High School music program is being severely impacted next school year by proposed district administration budget cuts. In an effort to balance the budget\, administration is cutting approximately 25% of the district’s music program. Two of the five school’s band classes\, including Jazz 2\, and the school’s only choir class will not exist next year if this budget is approved. Allison/p\, Brendan Keller-Tuburg/b Kenny Phelps/dr and guest Garrett Spoelhof/org. \nButler has a sweet bopping tone to his horn\, similar to that of vintage players like Kenny Dorham and Blue Mitchell\, clear on the impressionistic “Suspension (Adrift\, Glide)”and gracefully cadencing to Allison’s piano on “Premonition\, Acuity Flourish”. Allison gets a spotlight on the nocturne of “Feeling” guest organ player Spoelhof adds texture to the elegiac “The Primrose Path”. Keller-Tuberg and Phelps dig in on the funky”Storybook” with Butler’s brass bright and clear\, whereas the team changes gears and ideas midstream on “Ramifications” and Butler in a fluffy form on the cirrus “When Darkness Reaches Morning”. Lots of enjoyable journeys on this trip.” \n~George Harris: Jazz Weekly \n \nSaxophonist Spencer Schillerstrom is becoming the best kept secret in the Chicago and Indianapolis metropolitan areas….Spencer has performed with a large group of musicians in his early career including Brad Leali\, Pharez Whitted\, Ron Carter\, Mark Colby\, Fareed Haque\, John Fedchock and Eddie Henderson.
