SUMMARY:Ancient Mbira Music of Zimbabwe: “Samaita” Vitalis Botsa w/Erica Azim @FSC
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents a performance with Vitalis “Samaita” Botsa and Erica Azim on Friday October 24th at 7:30pm\n\n\nCharismatic Zimbabwean master musician Vitalis “Samaita” Botsa creates \ngorgeous waves of sound with his mbira\, connecting the living with the \nancestors. “I’m just the car\, it’s the spirits doing the driving\, making the music\,” \nhe says. Visiting from his village in Zimbabwe for duo tour with Erica Azim\, \nBotsa is presenting mbira\, an ancient form of sacred music played by the Shona \npeople for over 1\,000 years. \n \nMbira also refers to the musical instrument with metal keys plucked by two \nthumbs and one forefinger\, creating calming yet invigorating polyphony and \npolyrhythm. Musicians play interlocking parts\, and the tradition includes \nextensive improvisation. Century after century\, the mbira instrument and its \nrepertoire of traditional songs have been used in Zimbabwe to heal the sick\, and \nin night-long to week-long ceremonies to summon family ancestors and \npowerful tribal guardian spirits to earth who help the living. Every time the \nmbira is played\, it is considered a prayer to the ancestors that will result in their \nprotection of the living. \n \n7pm Doors \n7:30 Show \n$15 Suggested Donation \nFREE PARKING

Inspired by archival klezmer recordings\, historic Yiddish dance houses\, and contemporary Jewish performing arts practices\, the Chicago-based ensemble performs lively\, soulful melodies that have traveled where Eastern European Jewish communities have lived over time\, infusing additional cultural music traditions and stories that ensemble members have collected along the way. They share unique\, intimate interpretations of these melodies as they weave together tradition and playful experimentation.Mostly Bones Lineup (8:45pm)Trombones: Joey Dies\, Josh Gagnon\, Mitchell BaileyBass Trombone: David PaligoraPiano: George MacLaurenBass: Ben FriedlandDrums: Jeff SagurtonBIO: Mostly Bones is a bold\, Boston-based jazz fusion ensemble redefining brass-forward music with an unexpected twist: four trombones leading the charge. SUMMARY:BUTTER CHICKEN BRASS BAND and PRABIR MEHTA Live at FSC
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents a performance with BUTTER CHICKEN BRASS BAND with special guest opener PRABIR MEHTA on Thursday\, October 9\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n \nBCBB \nButter Chicken Brass Band is a collaborative effort by musicians across several disciplines to explore the intersection of South Asian music\, a baraat band\, and a New Orleans-style brass band. This music is community music\, and Butter Chicken explores South Asian cultural practices to examine how to blend the sounds of traditional and popular music from the subcontinent with modern world music and American musical genres. The resulting sound and concert experience combines the community\, joy\, and movement of a wedding ceremony with the power and improvisation of a jazz group. Co-led by Catie Hickey (trombone\, arranger)\, Kabir Dalawari (Dhol)\, Akshat Jain (Sousaphone and arranger)\, and Kyle Brooks (saxophones)\, the group features a rotating cast of musicians from the Chicago area\, including Millie Ahern (trumpet) and Steve Bomar (drums). \n \nPRABIR MEHTA \nThe influence from frontman Prabir Mehta’s Indian heritage comes through loud and clear in this introduction\, but you also get a glimpse at the flawless nature of his voice and the way he and the rest of Prabir Trio can create a complete soundscape by using lush layers of beauty\, instrumentation\, and vocals to create a truly complete sound. \n– Girl At The Rock Shows \n \nPrabir makes the space between cultures seem both familiar and fun. \n– Style Weekly \n \nThe record carries influences from chants and prayers\, Indian raga\, and Southern gospel\, all interwoven with driving rock. \n– Charlottesville Weekly \n \nPrabir Trio is an India-inspired rock and roll band that melds eastern and western cultures together for a beautiful sonic experience. \n– NPR Live Sessions \n \n7:30pm PRABIR MEHTA \nPrabir Mehta\, Guitar/Vocals \nPrudhvi Meda\, Mridanga \n \n8:45pm BUTTER CHICKEN \nKyle Brooks\, Saxophones \nCatie Hickey\, Trombone \nAkshat Jain\, Sousaphone \nKabir Dalawari\, Dhol \n \n7pm Doors \n7:30pm Show \nIn-Person Only \n$15 Suggest Donation \nFREE PARKING

DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents a performance with VISIONS JAZZ ENSEMBLE with special guest opener JIMMY FARACE TRIO on Thur. Sept. 11th\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA.VISIONS JAZZ ENSEMBLEIn the summer of 2023\, musicians Garrett Fasig and Sam Butler were approached by the Timeless Music Project with an intriguing concept: What if college fight songs were arranged for a jazz ensemble? What would that sound like? This sparked a creative journey that merged two great American traditions—university fight songs and jazz. From brainstorming to composing\, Garrett and Sam spent months reimagining the melodies that embody school pride\, while incorporating the improvisational spirit of jazz. Collaborating with their **Visions Jazz Ensemble**\, they crafted 12 original arrangements\, selecting the finest fight songs and giving them fresh\, innovative interpretations that still held the melodies at their core—melodies that alumni and fans cherish for life.~visionsjazzensemble.comJIMMY FARACE“Not since Claire Daly has anyone found such a piping sweet spot on the baritone saxophone as Chicago reed man Jimmy Farace…an impressive launch for an outstanding new voice on baritone sax.”~Paul de Barros\, @downbeat_mag ️ ️ ️7:30pm JIMMY FARACE TRIOJimmy Farace – BariClarks Sommers – BassDana Hall – Drums8:45pm VISIONS JAZZ ENSEMBLESam Butler – Trumpet and ArrangementsGarrett Fasig – Tenor Saxophone and ArrangementsNick Recktenwald – TrumpetJeff Parker – TromboneDan Ventura – PianoAlex Hoberty – BassFrancis Bassett-Dilley – Drums7pm Doors7:30pm ShowIn-Person Only$15 Suggest DonationFREE PARKING

SUMMARY:Sara Ditchman's Solo Art Opening FOCUS - FLOW- FORM at FSC
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective\, in collaboration with West Town Chamber of Commerce\, presents Sara Ditchman’s Solo Art Opening FOCUS – FLOW- FORM\n\n\nFriday September 5th.Sara Ditchman is a visual artist with 13 years of ceramic experience and a BFA from University of Wisconsin\, Platteville. Since 2023\, she has been an artist at Fulton Street\, where she now works as Membership Coordinator. This summer she moved into her third-floor studio\, invested in her space\, and installed a kiln that has expanded her practice in transformative ways. Her work explores focus\, flow\, and form—ranging from experimental sculpture that emphasizes material exploration and assemblage\, to two-dimensional work that pushes shapes beyond the physical realm\, and most recently to functional pottery that celebrates proportion\, touch\, and form.Rooted in intuitive play\, her process is immersive\, sensual\, and bodily\, requiring patience\, repetition\, and an eye for aesthetic exploration. In an era of digital fatigue and distraction\, Sara’s work emphasizes the value of creating with one’s hands\, honoring transformation\, and bringing vibrance\, joy\, and curiosity into everyday life. Her goal is to share this by creating work that brings people joy and adds that energy and vibe to their space. To ensure the organic growth of West Town as Chicago’s emergent gallery district and further unite the neighborhood as a cultural destination\, please join us in our gallery for opening night .West Town Chamber of Commerce supports and elevates similar efforts while further facilitating connection amongst Chicago’s gallerists\, artists\, collectors and patrons.West Town Chamber of Commerce supports and elevates similar efforts while further facilitating connection among Chicago’s gallerists\, artists\, collectors and patrons. With enthusiastic participation from area galleries\, First Fridays offers the potential to ensure the continued development of the West Town neighborhood as a nexus of fine art and arts development in Chicago and beyond.RESERVATIONS RECOMMENDED:Fulton Street Collective1821 W. DESCRIPTION:Jazz Record Art Collective presents John Wambach Sextet performing Slide Hampton/Dexter Gordon’s 1969 release A DAY IN COPENHAGEN @FSC 9/3\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA.”Unlike many other American expatriates living in Europe\, tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon always managed to play and record with the top musicians while overseas. This excellent sextet session (with trombonist Slide Hampton\, trumpeter Dizzy Reece\, pianist Kenny Drew\, bassist Niels Pedersen and drummer Art Taylor) finds him exploring three Slide Hampton compositions and a trio of standard ballads. August 28th at 7:30PM\n\n\nThe evening will also feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n \n“The Unknown New is led by Chicago composer and multi-instrumentalist Paul Mutzabaugh.
