SUMMARY:Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers' live recording UGETSU Performed Live at JRAC
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Record Art Collective presents Interlace performing Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers’ 1963 live recording UGETSU on Thursday\, July 17 @FSC\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n \n“Birdland\, NYC June 16\, 1963…The most famous jazz club in the world has a capacity of just 98. Those fortunate enough to have attended that night were treated to an incredible performance by Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers. Although it was Blakey who inaugurated the “Live At Birdland” genre of albums (which has grown to over 100 individual titles by now)\, Ugetsu proved to be his third and final recording there. I must say\, they went out in style…Blakey was one of the finest drummers in jazz\, but it was the people he surrounded himself with who were the real story. Blakey’s Jazz Messengers were always the cream of the crop. Much like it was with Miles Davis\, a stint with Blakey could be considered something of a graduate course in musicianship…Right from the top\, the band is on fire. The great Cedar Walton’s piano opens up “One By One\,” the horns of Curtis Fuller (trombone)\, Freddie Hubbard (trumpet)\, and Wayne Shorter (sax) state the theme — then Blakey himself pounds a nice little drum break\, opening the song up for a fine Shorter solo. Holding it all together is the rock-solid bass of Reggie Workman….Art Blakey’s status as a jazz legend was already set in stone when this album was recorded\, so it is really no surprise just how good it is. But it truly is a powerhouse performance\, from a band who together and individually would continue to shape the course of music for decades to come. Ugetsu is the real deal\, folks — seriously cool beatnik-coffeehouse jazz for your pleasure.” \n~Greg Barbrick \n \nAndrew Meyer – trombone \nAndy Schlinder – tenor sax \nJon McQuade – trumpet \nTBA – piano \nChris Nolte – acoustic bass \nTBA – drums \n \n7pm Doors \n7:30pm Show \n$15 Suggest Donation \nFREE PARKING

SUMMARY:HUP Perform Heart's DREAMBOAT ANNIE Live at FSC
DESCRIPTION:FSC presents Heisenberg Uncertainty Players Big Band celebrating the 50th anniversary of Heart’s 1975 album “Dreamboat Annie” Tues. July 15\n\n\nThe night will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \nHeisenberg Uncertainty Players – a jazz big band performing exclusively original compositions and arrangements by John Dorhauer – continues their summer residency at Fulton by celebrating the 50th anniversary of Heart’s 1975 album “Dreamboat Annie” with their own inventive take on it. “Dreamboat Annie” is often considered one of the greatest debut albums in the history of rock & roll\, and it deftly distills elements of hard rock\, folk\, and pop in an album that flows together like a multi-movement composition. HUP’s small group pays homage to this classic album by arranging every song from it with the same unique and eclectic approach that the Wilson sisters took in creating the original.HUP is:John Dorhauer – trumpet\, arrangerNatalie Lande – tenor saxophoneJosh Torrey – tromboneChris Parsons – guitarDan Parker – bassEthan Bouwsma – drums \n7pm Doors7:30 Show$15 Suggested DonationFREE PARKING

SUMMARY:RICHARD PENA GROUP and PIRAGUAS Y PIROPOS  Live at FSC
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents a performance with RICHARD PENA GROUP and PIRAGUAS Y PIROPOS on Tuesday\, May 13th at 7:30pm\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n \nGuitarist\, composer\, and educator Richard Peña is a rising force in Latin jazz\, blending Afro-Caribbean traditions with modern jazz innovation. Named Youth Jazz Ambassador by the Humacao Friends of Jazz Association\, Peña has performed internationally as a bandleader and alongside Grammy-winning artists such as Horacio “El Negro” Hernández\, Dafnis Prieto\, Henry Cole\, Richie Flores\, Charlie Sepúlveda\, Carlos Vives\, and Victor Manuelle. \n \nPiraguas y Piropos came from an absence in musical representation locally to have an ensemble that actively performs Jibaro Music (also known as Puerto Rican Folkloric Traditional Music) in Chicago. Outside of its presence in mainland Puerto Rico\, the music we play is not only an act of performance but an essential piece of keeping alive a severely underrepresented form of music. Both musicians were raised and taught in the Puerto Rican tradition with an ample background studying and performing jazz to incorporate elements of jazz into Jibaro music without losing the essence of it. A lot of Jibaro music has classical music background but also offers the flavor and syncopations of the Caribbean\, bringing a dance element that makes it well received by a large audience. We’ve landed on a format that allows us to revere our origins while incorporating an openness to improvise in a way that keeps it fresh every time it is performed.  \n \n7:30 PIRAGUAS Y PIROPOS \nJose Carrasquillo – Cuatro \nMarcos Rios – Guitar \nTommy Carroll – Percussion \n \n8:45 RICHARD PENA GROUP \nRichard Peña – Guitar \nNeil Carson – Sax \nFreddie Quintero – Bass \nJonathon Wenzel – Drums \nVictor Junito Gonzalez – Conga \n \n7pm Doors \n7:30pm Show \n$15 Suggest Donation \nFREE PARKING
