SUMMARY:RICHARD PENA GROUP and PIRAGUAS Y PIROPOS  Live at FSC
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents a performance with RICHARD PENA GROUP and PIRAGUAS Y PIROPOS on Tuesday\, May 13th at 7:30pm\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n \nGuitarist\, composer\, and educator Richard Peña is a rising force in Latin jazz\, blending Afro-Caribbean traditions with modern jazz innovation. Named Youth Jazz Ambassador by the Humacao Friends of Jazz Association\, Peña has performed internationally as a bandleader and alongside Grammy-winning artists such as Horacio “El Negro” Hernández\, Dafnis Prieto\, Henry Cole\, Richie Flores\, Charlie Sepúlveda\, Carlos Vives\, and Victor Manuelle. \n \nPiraguas y Piropos came from an absence in musical representation locally to have an ensemble that actively performs Jibaro Music (also known as Puerto Rican Folkloric Traditional Music) in Chicago. Outside of its presence in mainland Puerto Rico\, the music we play is not only an act of performance but an essential piece of keeping alive a severely underrepresented form of music. Both musicians were raised and taught in the Puerto Rican tradition with an ample background studying and performing jazz to incorporate elements of jazz into Jibaro music without losing the essence of it. A lot of Jibaro music has classical music background but also offers the flavor and syncopations of the Caribbean\, bringing a dance element that makes it well received by a large audience. We’ve landed on a format that allows us to revere our origins while incorporating an openness to improvise in a way that keeps it fresh every time it is performed.  \n \n7:30 PIRAGUAS Y PIROPOS \nJose Carrasquillo – Cuatro \nMarcos Rios – Guitar \nTommy Carroll – Percussion \n \n8:45 RICHARD PENA GROUP \nRichard Peña – Guitar \nNeil Carson – Sax \nFreddie Quintero – Bass \nJonathon Wenzel – Drums \nVictor Junito Gonzalez – Conga \n \n7pm Doors \n7:30pm Show \n$15 Suggest Donation \nFREE PARKING

DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents a performance with Mycelium New Music on Thursday\, May 8th at 7:30pm\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \nMycelium New Music is a Chicago-based ensemble committed to creating exciting\, multidisciplinary performances of contemporary music. At its fall concert at Constellation\, composer and alt-folk vocalist Annika Socolofsky joins the ensemble for the Chicago premiere of her song cycle Don’t say a word\, alongside music by young composers Seare Farhat\, Christian Quiñones\, and Grace Ann Lee. SUMMARY:SONGS OF A DECAYING EMPIRE: Music & Poetry by Robert Świstelnicki @ FSC
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents SONGS OF A DECAYING EMPIRE: Music & Poetry by Robert Świstelnicki Live on Wednesday May 7th at 7:30pm\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n \n‘Songs of a Decaying Empire’ is a project at the intersection of jazz\, poetry\, avantgarde and the singer-songwriter genre. It contemplates the dark corners of contemporary imperial depravity\, it explores dreams\, ecstasies\, horrors and comedies of our “late capitalistic” circumstance and it philosophizes the aberrations of contemporary socio-political habits and paradigms. But it also looks- in the dark matter that it investigates- for light\, love\, humor and redemption. \nThe music and the poetry for this project- and for an album forthcoming in late summer 2025- has been almost entirely written by Robert Świstelnicki. Swistelnicki is a poet\, songwriter\, composer and philosopher from Poland\, who moved to Chicago for his PhD Studies (in German Philosophy and Literature at Northwestern). His previous project (in a rough translation from Polish) was called ‘Love Songs of Early Post-Communism and Late Capitalism’ (SJ Records 23’). That project has been\, among others\, chosen as the Album of the Year (Editor’s Choice) by “Polish Jazz”; and in reviews it was called: “one of the biggest sensations in Polish jazz in recent years” (M. Nowotny)\, “the best Polish album of ALL TIME” in its category (prof. M. Lewenstein)\, a “visionary album” (T. Janas) and a “new point of reference” (M. Płudowski). \nFor his current project Świstelnicki has invited the pearls of the Chicago jazz scene. \n \nAna Everling- voice \nMarvin Tate- voice \nMark Feldman- violin \nDave Miller- guitar \nEthan Philion- bass \nRobert Świstelnicki- compositions\, poetry\, piano \nQuin Kirchner- drums (just for set 2) \n \n7pm Doors \n7:30 Show \n$15 Suggested Donation \nFree Parking

SUMMARY:ZACC HARRIS GROUP and TWIN TALK Live at Fulton Street Collective
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents a performance with ZACC HARRIS GROUP and TWIN TALK on Tuesday\, May 6th at 7:30pm\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n \nSince forming in 2012\, Chicago’s Twin Talk has steadily drifted from the conventions of the saxophone trio. Saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi\, bassist-singer Katie Ernst\, and drummer Andrew Green have spent their time on the band stage together making their music elastic\, spontaneous\, and open\, embracing new inspirations without stifling the improvisational heart of their work. While all three musicians are active members in the city’s bustling jazz community\, each playing in numerous working bands\, they’ve found a true collective voice as Twin Talk. They use live performances as opportunities to stretch—expanding on composed material and ditching set lists in favor of calling tunes on the fly. \n~twintalkmusic.comZacc Harris is a Minneapolis-based guitarist\, composer\, and bandleader who has been an integral part of the Twin Cities jazz scene since 2005. Recognized for his articulate guitar work\, inventive compositions\, and dynamic live performances\, he performs with and leads a range of projects\, including the Atlantis Quartet\, the Zacc Harris Group\, and American Reverie. In 2017\, he was named the Twin Cities’ Best Jazz Artist by City Pages.~zaccharris.com \n7:30 TWIN TALK \nDustin Laurenzi – Sax \nKatie Ernst – Bass \nAndrew Green – Drums \n8:45 ZACC HARRIS GROUPBrandon Wozniak – tenor saxophone \nZacc Harris – guitar \nBryan Nichols – piano \nChris Bates – bass \nPete James Johnson – drums \n7pm Doors7:30pm Show$15 Suggest DonationFREE PARKING

SUMMARY:JAZZ OCCURRENCE with Isabella Isherwood Live at FSC
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective celebrates International Jazz Day with performances by Isabella Isherwood Quartet and Scott Hesse on Wed. April 30\n\n\nWhat is a Jazz Occurrence? \nLewis Achenbach interprets the music and atmosphere of an event in his artwork in the moment. \n“It started with documenting live music through an imaginative process\, but it has become much more. \nIt now feels like a translation or an amalgam of two languages. To hear this painting is a meeting place of the sonic and visual arts. \nWe have a dialogue about our future by using the tools of our past. This is an artistic movement. The artists from opposite banks are meeting in the rush of mid-river.” \n– Lewis Achenbach\, founder \n \nInternational Jazz Day is an International Day declared by the United Nations Educational\, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 2011 “to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe.” It is celebrated annually on April 30. \n \n7:30 Scott Hesse (Solo Guitar) \n \n8pm Isabella Isherwood Quartet \nIsabella Isherwood – voice\, pianoSamuel Mösching – guitarJon Nadel – bassAlejandro Salazar – drums \n \n7pm Doors \n7:30 Show \n$15 Suggested Donation \nFree Parking

SUMMARY:Annual Paul Chambers Birthday Celebration Live at Fulton Street Collective
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Street Collective presents the Annual Paul Chambers Birthday Celebration with Chris Dammann Quartet Tuesday\, April 22nd at 7:30pm\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n \n“One of the premier bassists in jazz history\, Paul Chambers (April 22\, 1935 – January 4\, 1969) had it all: a beautiful tone\, a fluid technique\, a great choice of notes\, impeccable time and a magnificent sense of swing. He could even take a bowed solo and keep it interesting and in tune…Paul Chambers was born in Pittsburgh in 1935\, and grew up in Detroit\, where he became part of the city’s growing jazz scene. He moved to New York\, where he played in the J.J. Johnson-Kai Winding quintet. He joined Miles Davis’ first legendary quintet along with John Coltrane\, Philly Joe Jones\, and Red Garland\, at the age of 20. As the bass player\, he complimented Jones perfectly on fast songs and played just well on ballads. He spent the bulk of his prime years (1955-1963) as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet\, participating in virtually all of Davis’ classic recordings of the era. After leaving Davis’ group\, he continued working with the pianist who replaced Garland in Davis’ group\, Wynton Kelly\, and he did freelance work in New York….Chambers holds the unique distinction\, along with Coltrane and Wynton Kelly\, of participating on two of the most important albums in jazz history: Coltrane’s Giant Steps\, and Davis’ Kind of Blue. Both albums are radically different in style\, a testament to Chambers’ ability. As a matter of fact\, the song “Mr. P.C.” on “Giant Steps\,” was written for Chambers (P.C. = Paul Chambers). Coltrane said about him\, “Chambers is one of the greatest bass players in jazz. His playing is beyond what I could say about it. The bass is such an important instrument\, and has so much to do with a group and a soloist can best function that I feel very fortunate to have had him on this recording date and to have been able to work with him in Miles’ band so long.” \nUnfortunately\, Chambers died of tuberculosis at the premature age of 33.” \n~AllAboutJazz.com \n \nChristopher Dammann invites some friends to play Paul Chambers original compositions and arrangements in celebration of his birthday. \nChristopher Dammann – Bass \nPaul Giallorenzo – Piano \nSam Frampton – guitar \nJacob Fawcett – drums \n \n7pm Doors7:30pm ShowIn-Person Only$15 Suggest DonationFREE PARKING

SUMMARY:McCoy Tyner's 1967 Album THE REAL McCOY Performed Live at JRAC
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Record Art Collective presents Doug Bistro Quintet performing McCoy Tyner’s 1967 release THE REAL McCOY on Wednesday\, April 2nd at FSC\n\n\nThe evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. \n \n“Two and a half years after his last recording as a leader for Impulse\, pianist McCoy Tyner emerged to start a period on Blue Note that would result in seven albums. Having left John Coltrane‘s Quartet in late 1965\, Tyner was entering a period of struggle\, although artistically his playing grew quite a bit in the late ’60s. For this release\, the pianist is teamed with tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson\, bassist Ron Carter\, and drummer Elvin Jones for five of his originals. Highlights of the easily recommended album include “Passion Dance\,” “Four by Five\,” and “Blues on the Corner..” \n~Scott Yanow \n \nDoug Bistrow\, bass \nTheodis Rogers\, piano \nJim Gailloreto\, saxophone \nVictor Garcia\, trumpet \nQuin Kirchner\, drums \n \n7pm Doors7:30pm Show$15 Suggest DonationFREE PARKING
