Deva Suckerman
Biographical Info Originally from Minneapolis, Deva moved to Chicago in 1997. She has worked with ARC Gallery and Educational Foundation and the City of Chicago as a CAAP grant visual arts panelist. Deva was a featured artist for Chicago Artists Month and the cover artist for the City of Chicago’s Women’s History Month Calendar. Her work has been reviewed in TimeOut Chicago, received Critic’s Choice in the Chicago Reader, and three curator’s choice awards from the Around the Coyote Arts Organization. One of her favorite projects was PartsUnknown Gallery, an alternative gallery space where she curated shows of work by her favorite local artists. Deva currently balances her art life with her life as a licensed counselor and art therapist working with children in foster care. She works out of the Bloomingdale Arts Building where she enjoys rummaging through piles of found wood, building canvases from her finds, and seeing where the process takes her.
Artist Type painter
Location Chicago, IL
Short Description I am fascinated with collecting and creating from found wood. Transforming the distressed qualities of the material through the image, the beauty in accepting and working with imperfections, giving new life to discarded objects. The mood becomes peaceful and haunting, perfect and flawed. The process is intuitive and deeply gratifying.
