Over by There: All Things Chicago

Curated by Ryan Miller @ryan.miller.art

What is it that makes Chicago unique? To some, it’s tall buildings and old memories of mobsters. To others, it’s sports teams and Italian beef sandwiches. This show will celebrate the many things that make the great city of Chicago what it is. There’s too many to list here, so show us what Chicago means to you.

This concert explores the shared emotional language of humanity as expressed through the rich and complex heritage of Latin America. Shaped by the meeting of three continents, Europe, Africa and the Indigenous Americas, the music reflects a cultural dialogue, tension and fusion. The pieces selected for this program speak from both a distinct cultural identity and to something universally human. In these sounds, we hear longing, joy, resilience and memory, emotions that belong to no single place, yet find a powerful voice in Latin America's unique artistic inheritance.

The AuxIn: Connected! concert series is supported by a generous grant from the Driehaus Foundation.

Meet our artist of the week a Chicago native and a Meet our artist of the week a Chicago native and a member of Fulton Street Collective Bria Bridges. Bria Bridges is a Chicago-based fine artist whose work reinterprets cubism and surrealism through a contemporary lens. Influenced early by these movements, she developed a practice focused on expressive portraiture. She committed fully to painting in 2022 and has since exhibited in over twenty shows across Chicago, including solo and duo exhibitions. Her work draws from travel, experimentation, and constant studio practice, aiming to push familiar art histories into a fresh, modern visual language.

Meet our artist of the week, Chicago area native R Meet our artist of the week, Chicago area native Ryan Miller.

He was a full-time musician before becoming a full-time artist, frame-maker and curator. His paintings are best described as abstract surrealism, employing the gestural techniques of Abstract Expressionism as well as many concepts from Surrealism and Dada art, such as free association and automatism, and grattage.

Since he began selling his artwork in 2020, he has done five solo gallery shows, and been a part of countless group shows in the Chicago area. His hand-made hardwood frames can now be found around the artwork of dozens of other Chicago artists, and after managing their corporate curation program Artwalls for three years, he is now the head curator of The Fulton Street Collective.
