The evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA.
In November 1961, jazz legend Benny Carter assembled a stellar group featuring top New York saxophonists Coleman Hawkins, Phil Woods, Charlie Rouse, and himself (as performer and
arranger), and a rhythm section that included jazz legends Joe Jones on drums and Jimmy Garrison on bass. Together, they created the iconic album “Further Definitions,” which was
celebrated at the time for Benny’s writing, ensemble work, and the solos of Hawkins, Rouse, Woods, and Carter. The instrumentation was somewhat unusual for the day—just a sax section with rhythm— but it worked and produced a great album.
Luckily, that music was preserved and will be performed along with other recent arrangements written for the same instrumentation, by Chicago saxophonists—Scott Burns, Dan Nicholson, Kevin Kizer, and Chris Lega:
Chris Lega – Tenor
Scott Burns – Tenor
Dan Nicholson – Alto
Kevin Kizer – Tenor
Joey Skoch – Piano
Dennis Carroll – Bass
George Fludas – Drums
