Chris Shuttleworth’s most recent compositional endeavor Mortar merges musicians from widely different musical backgrounds into an ensemble that fuses seemingly incongruous music traditions. Mortar subverts expectations of chamber brass playing by frequently utilizing a very reserved, personal brass sound in conjunction with low strings and electric guitar. The result is a unique combination of composed and improvised elements that strives to be both deeply intriguing and entirely approachable
