THE NUTCRACKER SUITE live at Jazz Record Art Collective
All tunes arranged by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn.
The evening will feature live painting from visual artist Lewis Achenbach.
“In 1960, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn decided to take on Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite, released on Columbia records. Although there were risks of transforming the works of one the most prolific composers into a jazz setting, Duke and Billy attacked the Russian Composer’s music and treat it as if it were their own. In order to truly fit the change of the music, Duke and Billy decided to retitle the songs. This record serves as a tribute to the Russian composer Tchaikovsky, as well as the artistry of both Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn.”
