THE NUTCRACKER SUITE on Friday December 17th at 8pm
All tunes were arranged by Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. The evening will feature live painting from visual artist Leeis Achenbach.
“In 1960, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn decide to take on Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite released on Columbia records. Although there were risks of transforming the works of one the most prolific composers into a jazz setting, Duke and Billy attacks the Russian Composers music and treats it as if it was their own. In order totruly fit the change of the music, Duke and Billy decided to rename the titles of the songs. This record serves as a tribute to the Russian composer Tchaikovsky, but also the artistry of both Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn.”
